Passport warning which could impact travellers entering UK from Europe
Entry requirements for the UK has changed, meaning that all Europeans must now carry a passport.
More than 200 million Europeans will be banned from using a national identity card from October 1 in the latest Brexit rule change.
Following the announcement last year, citizens from the EU and Switzerland cannot enter the UK using a national ID card and will be subject to the same rules as the rest of the world.
The Home Office said the ID cards are some of the most forged documents seen by Border Force officers.
Last year, almost half of all false documents detected at the border were EU, EEA or Swiss ID cards.
The change will not apply to those who are part of the UK’s EU Settlement Scheme or have equivalent rights, who will be able to continue using ID cards to enter the UK until at least 2025.
The UK Government said it hopes to prevent organised criminal gangs and illegal migrants from using ID cards to unlawfully enter the UK.
It comes after passport rules from UK travellers has changed, with everyone now needing one that has been issued in the last 10 years in order to gain entry into Europe.
When UK left the EU last year, a new blue passport design with the lettering 'BRITISH PASSPORT' replaced the original red which is slowly being phased out.
Under new Brexit terms, you could be denied travel even if you have a year left on your passport because additional months on old versions are no longer valid.
This could reduce the validity time by several months without people being aware.
The conditions are that a passport needs to be valid for at least three months after the date you intend to leave the EU, and it has to have been issued within the last 10 years.
Up until September 2018, the policy for passports gave individuals credit for unspent time when renewing their passports which was typically up to 10 years and nine months.
The government advises you check your passport is valid before you travel abroad.
