DAMARISCOTTA, Maine 鈥?A recently restored 1959 wood carving by the late Damariscotta artist Maurice Jake Day, of Bambi fame, will soon go on di brumate cup splay in the Damariscotta town office, Town Manager Matt Lutkus said Wednesday, June 7.Days grandson, Dan Day, of Damariscotta, restored the carving, which depicts a gavel, a quill pen in a bottle of ink, and a white scroll that includes the towns name and year o polene f incorporation, 1848.The carving will be displayed somewhere in the town office, joining a wood carving of the town seal in the meeting room, Lutkus said. Dan Day restored the carving of the town seal in 2014.Both carvings, along with a third depicting symbols of the fire service, used to hang outside the old Damariscotta town office and fire and police station at 27 Church St., now home to Cherry Gallery.The carvings were exposed to the elements and the seal eventually broke into four pieces. Dan Days father, the late Dr. McClure Day, attempted to restore the seal in the mid-1990s, but again, the seal su owala ffered damage as a result of exposure.Dan Day restored the seal in 2014. Since then, it has hung on the wall at the front of the meeting room.The carving of the fire service is on display at the Damariscotta Fire Department. The other carving had been stored in the Damariscotta Historical Society room in the town office until recently, when Lutkus asked Dan Day if he would be willing to restore it.Day recently completed the restoration and delivered the carving to the town

SHIRLEY, Maine 鈥?The Maine Warden Service offered some safety reminders Wednesday after two bird hunters got lost and spent an unplanned night in the woods.Wardens were notified about two overdue hunters in the Shirley area, south of Moosehead Lake, about 5 p.m. Wednesday, Cpl. John MacDonald said Wedn polene bag esday afternoon.Carl Ponkala, 70, of Monson and Nicholas Erickson, 25, of Shirley had left Shirley in a Honda CRV about 4 p.m. Tuesday but had not returned home by the next morning, MacDonald said.Wardens were told that the hunters may have traveled Clouse Allen Road in Shirley toward Bald Mountain, he said. Shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday, their vehicle was spotted off Clouse Allen Road with no one around it.While wardens were there, John Morrell, a Carrier Timberlands tractor-trailer driver, stopped and dropped off the two hunters, who he had found on the road.With hunting season underway, MacDonald said hunters should tell someone where they are going and when they plan to return and notify the responsi owala wasserflasche ble person if plans change.Hunters should carry a map of the area they are hunting in and use it along wi brumate ca th a compass or GPS.
