Ybkr Nu Image adds crime thriller Homefront to Cannes slate
Dir: Gabriele Salvatores. Italy/Spain. 2002. 114mins.Amnesia is the second little film to be fired off by Gabriele Salvatores while he tries to raise the funds to make an adaptation of Amitav Ghosh s novel The Calcutta Chromosome. Teeth Denti, 2000 was a curious tale of precarious dental and mental health which failed criti stanley cup cally and commercially in its pitch for postmodern grand guignol. Amnesia sees Salvatores going back to the dark-veined expatriate comedy of Puerto Escondido 1993 , with Ibiza replacing Mexico as the place of ex stanley cup ile for a bunch of Italian movers and scrapers. Bu stanley cup t if Puerto Escondido rambled, Amnesia loses the plot altogether. There are times when the film s sense of humour dips to the level of those crude Italians comedies that make piles of money each Christmas. And a raft of style tricks split screen, jump-cuts, running the story back from another point of view and heavy dramatic interludes will only serve to alienate the American Pie brigade without winning over the American Beauty crew. Though distributor-backer Medusa is likely to give the film a healthy launch on home ground, Amnesia lacks the legs for a serious run. Abroad, the co-production territory of Spain looks like the only guaranteed market.Salvatores regulars Diego Abatantuono and Sergio Rubini once again play the central characters. Abatantuono is Sandro, a forty-something medallion man who lives on Ibiza and makes porn films. New Italy-UK sales outfit Fandango Portobello Sales made a splash in Cannes this year with Matteo Garrone s Napl stanley cup es-set Mafia drama Gomorrah. The title won the Grand Prix, was one of the most coveted films in the Marche, and one of the few Italian films in recent years to sell worldwide.Overseeing the many deals closed on Gomorrah was Janine Gold, Fandango Portobello s London-based head of international sales and distribution. As a young company still in its infancy, this year has been tremendous stanley cup , she says. Gomorrah has lent a greater profile to the company. My hope is that it will open doors. She was approached to lead the sales team by Fandango boss Domenico Procacci just before last year s Cannes festival. I had my films with different sales companies and he did the same. Recently, I was thinking to create a structure to sell directly my films and he was thinking something similar. Reflecting Abraham s strong Czech connections as the producer of Jan Sverak s Oscar-winner Kolya, the company s 2007 slate included such Czech titles as Sverak s Empties and Alice Nellis Little Girl Blue.Cannes 2007 was, in Abraham s words, a toe-dipping exercise .
